DJI Matrice 400 payload · Supplied by DroneBaseDrone Water Sampler for DJI Matrice 400

The Water Sampler System for DJI Matrice 400 is a drone water sampler that collects up to 4 separate water samples in a single flight from lakes, rivers, reservoirs, ports, wastewater plants and industrial sites, without boats, waders or staff working at the water’s edge. A starlight night vision camera, a millimetre-wave height sensor and an automatic emergency line cutter let one operator control every step from the remote controller through DJI Pilot 2.

DroneBase supplies the complete setup: aircraft, sampler, batteries, configuration and operator training, from an authorised DJI Enterprise dealer based in Italy.

How the drone water sampler works on a mission

Traditional water sampling means launching a boat, wading into a channel or leaning over a quay wall with a pole. A water sampling drone removes most of that exposure: the operator stays on the bank, flies the DJI Matrice 400 to the sampling point and lowers the sampling tube into the water from a safe hover height. A typical mission follows four steps.

1. Mount and checkThe sampler attaches to the aircraft with a one-handed quick-release mount. Fitting the clean containers and running pre-flight checks takes less than 2 minutes
2. Fly to the pointThe operator flies to the planned coordinates and watches the water surface through the starlight camera, also in low light
3. SampleThe millimetre-wave sensor measures the distance to the surface. The tube goes into the water and the sample is routed to one of the 4 containers, with a live temperature reading
4. Repeat or returnMove to the next point and fill the next container, then land and hand the samples over for labelling, cooling and transport to the laboratory
Why choose it

Key features of the DJI Matrice 400 water sampler

The design addresses three practical problems: seeing the water, holding the right height above it and recovering safely if the line snags.

4 separate samplesFour containers per flight, so one sortie covers several points or several depths on the same site
Anti-contamination routingA dedicated distribution method keeps each sample in its own container and prevents secondary contamination between them
Starlight night vision cameraLive view of the sampling point at dawn, dusk or in poor light, when many discharge checks and emergencies happen
Millimetre-wave height sensorMeasures the height above the water surface, which is hard to judge by eye over reflective or murky water
Automatic line cutterIf the line snags on aquatic plants it is cut automatically, and the operator can also trigger an emergency release from the controller
Integrated thermometerThe sampling tube reads water temperature in real time, a field parameter most monitoring protocols ask you to record
Use cases

Where a water sampling drone pays off

Lakes and reservoirsOpen-water points far from shore, drinking water reservoirs and algal bloom checks without launching a boat
Rivers and canalsMid-channel samples in fast or deep water, upstream and downstream of discharge points, irrigation networks
Ports and coastal watersHarbour basins, marinas and outfalls where access from quays is limited or unsafe
Wastewater plants and industrySettling tanks, lagoons and effluent channels sampled without staff working next to open basins
Emergency contaminationSpills, fish kills, floods and fire-fighting runoff, where civil protection teams need samples before entering the area
Research and aquacultureRepeatable sampling grids for universities and labs, and routine checks of water parameters on fish farms
Workflow and data quality

From flight plan to laboratory: keeping the chain of custody intact

A drone water sampling system changes how the sample is collected, not the rules that make a result defensible. Agree the protocol with the laboratory that will run the analyses before the first flight: container type and volume, preservatives, holding times and how the samples must be cooled.

On site, use clean or pre-conditioned containers and assign each of the four positions to a planned point. Record point ID, coordinates, time, operator and water temperature; the flight log helps document where and when each sample was taken.

After landing, cap and label the containers immediately, place them in a cool box and fill in the chain-of-custody form before handing them to the courier or the lab. If samples will support regulatory reporting, check with your environmental authority whether drone collection is accepted for that parameter and how it must be described in the sampling report.

On the flight side, operations over water near people, plants or ports usually fall outside the simplest Open-category scenarios. Under the EASA framework the applicable category depends on the aircraft, the site and the operation; DroneBase can help you assess the scenario and prepare the documentation for the Specific category where it is required.

What is included and what to pair it with

The package contains the main sampler unit with sensors, 4 sample containers, the quick-release mount for the Matrice 400, the sampling tube with integrated thermometer, the control cable for the remote controller and a multilingual installation and operation manual. To run it you also need the aircraft and its power system:

Carrier aircraft for the sampler
Spare sets for back-to-back sampling flights
Field charging between sorties
Protection plan for work over water

The same Matrice 400 can carry other DroneBase payloads, such as the Smart Winch with Speaker for search and rescue drops and the Drone Cleaning System for facades and solar plants.

The product

A drone water sampler built for the DJI Matrice 400

The Water Sampler System DJI Matrice 400 turns the DJI Matrice 400 into a drone water sampler for environmental agencies, water utilities, port authorities, wastewater operators, civil protection and research teams. It collects 4 separate samples per flight through a distribution system that prevents secondary contamination, measures height above the water with a millimetre-wave sensor, shows the sampling point through a starlight night vision camera and records water temperature in real time. The DJI Matrice 400 water sampler mounts in under 2 minutes and is operated by a single person through DJI Pilot 2. DroneBase, an authorised DJI Enterprise dealer and system integrator certified ISO 9001:2015 and based in Italy, supplies the sampler together with the Matrice 400, batteries, configuration and operator training. Frequently asked questions

Drone water sampler FAQ

Which drones is this water sampler compatible with?
This version is designed for the DJI Matrice 400, with a quick-release mount specific to that aircraft. Use on other drones requires a technical check and possibly a different mounting system, so contact DroneBase before ordering.
How many samples can the drone water sampler collect per flight?
Up to 4 separate samples, each in its own container. You can use them for four different points on the same site or for repeat samples at one point.
What volume does each container hold?
Container capacity is variable. Since the required volume depends on your lab’s analyses, send us your parameter list and we will confirm the right configuration.
How deep can it sample?
Sampling depth depends on the length of the sampling tube and on site conditions such as current and wind. The system can be set up for different depths according to the mission; confirm your target depth with us when you request a quote.
How does the anti-tangling emergency system work?
If the line meets abnormal resistance, for example when it catches on aquatic vegetation, the system cuts it automatically so the aircraft is not pulled down and can return safely. The operator can also trigger an emergency release from the remote controller.
Are the samples protected from cross-contamination?
Yes. The distribution system routes each sample to its own container and is designed to prevent secondary contamination during collection and transfer. Clean or pre-conditioned containers and correct handling after landing remain the operator’s responsibility.
Can I fly sampling missions at night or in low light?
The integrated starlight night vision camera gives a usable view of the sampling point in low light. Whether you may fly at night depends on your authorisation and national rules.
Do I need a special authorisation to operate a water sampling drone?
It depends on the aircraft, the location and the operation. Sampling near people, industrial plants or port infrastructure often requires the Specific category under the EASA framework. DroneBase can assess your scenario and support the documentation.
How long does setup take and how many people are needed?
The sampler mounts with a one-handed quick-release in less than 2 minutes and is designed for single-person operation through DJI Pilot 2. For work over water we still recommend an observer on site.
Do you provide training?
Yes. DroneBase delivers operator training on the Matrice 400, DJI Pilot 2 and the sampling workflow, including container handling and field records. Call +39 0541.1790411 or use the contact form to arrange it.
