What is a professional drone

A professional drone, or enterprise drone, is built to deliver reliable, repeatable data: an orthophoto with centimetre accuracy, a temperature reading on a solar panel, a LiDAR point cloud, a crop treatment at a controlled rate. Video quality matters less than sensor, positioning, flight safety, mission software and support. In practice a professional drone is defined by six elements:

  • Dedicated sensors: mechanical-shutter cameras for photogrammetry, zoom and radiometric thermal cameras for inspection, multispectral cameras for agriculture, LiDAR for surveying.
  • Interchangeable payloads: platforms such as Matrice 400 and Matrice 350 RTK carry Zenmuse cameras, spotlights, speakers, gas sensors and third-party instruments.
  • IP rating: IP55 on Matrice 400 and Matrice 350 RTK, IP56 on the DJI Dock 3 station, to work in light rain and dust.
  • RTK: centimetre-level positioning for mapping with few or no ground control points and for repeatable missions.
  • Enterprise support: DJI Care Enterprise plans, maintenance programmes, spare parts and an integrator who handles configuration, training and service.
  • Class and regulation: many professional operations fall under the specific category of EU Regulation 2019/947 and need the right certificates and procedures.

Professional, semi-professional or consumer drone: the differences

A semi-professional drone is often bought for good images at a contained cost. Moving to a professional drone makes sense when the drone becomes part of a process: a survey delivered to a client, an inspection to document, a service repeated every week.

Professional drone with camera: which sensors you need

Which professional camera drone to choose depends on the data you need, not on megapixels:

  • Photogrammetry and mapping: large sensor and mechanical shutter. The DJI Matrice 4E has a 4/3" 20 MP wide camera with mechanical shutter, two 48 MP tele cameras and a laser rangefinder; for large areas there is the Matrice 350 RTK + Zenmuse P1 combo with a 45 MP full-frame sensor.
  • Visual and thermal inspection: optical zoom and radiometric thermal camera. The DJI Matrice 4T combines wide camera, two tele cameras, a radiometric thermal camera (640×512, up to 1280×1024 in Super Resolution) and a 1,800 m laser rangefinder; Matrice 350 RTK and Matrice 400 carry the Zenmuse H30T.
  • Precision agriculture: the DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral has a 4/3" 20 MP RGB camera and four 5 MP multispectral cameras (green, red, red edge, near infrared) with a sunlight sensor.
  • 3D LiDAR surveying: for vegetation, power lines and terrain models you need a LiDAR such as the Zenmuse L2 or third-party 3D LiDAR for drones.

What drives the cost of a professional drone

The drone is only part of the investment. When you build a budget, consider:

  • Payload: on Matrice 400 and Matrice 350 RTK the sensor (zoom/thermal, full frame, LiDAR, gas sensors) often costs as much as the drone or more. Example: the CH4 laser sensor for Matrice 350/400 is listed at €36,499.
  • Batteries and charging: a full working day needs several batteries and a station. For Matrice 400 the TB100 battery is €1,562 and the BS100 station €1,361.
  • Software: DJI Terra for processing (Matrice 4E includes a 1-year licence), FlightHub 2 for fleet and Dock management, third-party software for LiDAR and GIS.
  • Training: pilot certificates and workflow training. Examples: DJI Agras agriculture course (8 hours) €1,220, DJI FlightHub 2 with Dock 3 course (8 hours) €690.
  • Care and maintenance: DJI Care Enterprise Plus is €886 for Matrice 400 and €605 for Matrice 4E; Matrice 4 models also have periodic maintenance programmes.
  • ENAC/EASA compliance: some scenarios require C5/C6 class conversion kits with parachute and flight terminator, e.g. the DJI AP100 kit for Matrice 400 (€1,209). BVLOS configurations are grouped in the BVLOS bundles.
  • Installation and integration: a drone-in-a-box needs a site survey, power, network, RTK, configuration and commissioning, which we quote as part of the project.

Work drone: how to choose by sector

A work drone is chosen starting from the mission. These are the configurations we propose most often.

Industrial and infrastructure inspection

For plants, roofs, solar farms and power lines: Matrice 4T for fast thermal inspections; Matrice 400 or Matrice 350 RTK with Zenmuse H30T when you need long zoom, more payloads or work in light rain (IP55). See the thermography and inspection bundles.

Topographic survey, photogrammetry and LiDAR

Matrice 4 Series for construction sites, quarries and buildings; Matrice 350 RTK with Zenmuse P1 or L2 for large areas and surveying under vegetation. Ready configurations in the photogrammetry bundles and 3D LiDAR bundles.

Precision agriculture

Mavic 3 Multispectral for crop monitoring; Agras T25 (20 kg spraying, 25 kg spreading) for a single operator and mid-size plots; Agras T50 (40 kg spraying, 50 kg spreading) and Agras T100 (100 L tank, 150 L hopper) for large areas. The whole range is in DJI Agras.

Public safety and search and rescue

Matrice 4T for patrol and SAR; Matrice 400 with thermal camera, spotlight and speaker for night missions; DJI Dock 3 with Matrice 4TD for scheduled remote surveillance. Accessories in public security and search and rescue.

Delivery and logistics

DJI FlyCart 100 carries up to 85 kg with dual battery (100 kg with single battery) and works with the Flagship Winch System, sold separately, with a 30 m cable. All solutions in DJI Delivery.

Drones for industrial inspection: types and configurations

The types of drones for industrial inspection fall into four families, often used together in the same fleet:

  • Compact thermal drones (Matrice 4T, Mavic 3 Thermal): ready in minutes, ideal for solar farms, roofs and frequent checks.
  • Multi-payload platforms (Matrice 400: 59 minutes of flight, up to 6 kg payload, IP55; Matrice 350 RTK: IP55): for long zoom, thermography, LiDAR or two sensors in one flight.
  • Drone-in-a-box (Dock 3 + Matrice 4D/4TD): scheduled inspections and patrols with no pilot on site, managed remotely with FlightHub 2. Dock 3 is IP56 and operates from -30 °C to +50 °C.
  • Specialist sensors: methane detectors, water samplers, cleaning systems, mounted on Matrice 350/400 or Dock 3.

An industrial inspection needs more than a drone: procedures, risk assessment, authorisations where required and a report format agreed with whoever receives the data. That is the part we handle as an integrator.

Regulation: what you need to fly a professional drone

In the EU professional drones fall under Regulation 2019/947; in Italy it is applied by ENAC and operators register on D-Flight. The required certificate depends on the category (open or specific) and on the scenario. The European standard scenarios STS-01 (visual line of sight over a controlled ground area) and STS-02 (beyond visual line of sight, BVLOS) require C5 and C6 class drones, which is why conversion kits with parachute and flight terminator exist. Operations outside standard scenarios need an authorisation based on a risk assessment. We help you identify the path that applies to your activity.
