Three Zenmuse H20 variants for visual inspections, thermal inspections and night operations with starlight sensors.

What is the DJI Zenmuse H20 Series and why it remains the reference multi-sensor payload

The DJI Zenmuse H20 Series is DJI's range of hybrid payloads that defined the standard for industrial inspections and drone security operations. Each model integrates in a single stabilised 3-axis gimbal a high-resolution zoom camera, wide-angle camera and laser rangefinder — eliminating the need for separate payloads for different operational scenarios. The H20T variant adds a radiometric thermal camera for thermal inspections and SAR operations; the H20N variant integrates starlight sensors for night operations in near-zero ambient light conditions. Compatible with the DJI Matrice 350 RTK and Matrice 300 RTK, the H20 series is adopted by police forces, fire brigades, power grid operators and industrial inspection operators worldwide.

Zenmuse H20 — 20× zoom, wide-angle and laser rangefinder

The Zenmuse H20 is the base model of the series: it integrates a zoom camera with 20× optical zoom and 200× hybrid zoom for close-up inspections from a safe distance, a 12 MP wide-angle camera with f/2.8 aperture for panoramic captures and drone orientation, and a laser rangefinder with a range of up to 1,200 m for precise ground distance measurement. All three sensors operate simultaneously with output visible in the DJI Pilot 2 interface in split-screen, allowing the operator to manage close-up inspection, environmental context and metric measurements in a single flight session.

Zenmuse H20T — radiometric thermal camera added for thermal inspections and SAR

The Zenmuse H20T adds to the H20's sensor system a 640×512 px radiometric thermal camera at 30 Hz with NETD ≤50 mK thermal sensitivity. Radiometric mode measures the absolute temperature on every pixel of the image, enabling quantitative analysis of thermal anomalies on electrical components, photovoltaic panels, industrial roofs and building structures. In a security context, the thermal camera enables the location of people in woodland environments, in smoke conditions or in total darkness. The H20T is the most versatile payload in the series and the recommended choice for those operating across multiple scenarios (inspection + security + SAR) with a single payload.

Zenmuse H20N — starlight sensors for operations in total darkness

The Zenmuse H20N is the variant specialised for night operations in near-zero ambient light conditions. It integrates starlight sensors on both the zoom and wide-angle cameras, enabling sharp colour image capture in near-total darkness (ambient brightness < 0.001 lux) without the need for active illuminators. The system includes dual thermal zoom cameras for thermal location of people and vehicles, and the laser rangefinder for distance measurements. It is the choice for law enforcement agencies, security forces and SAR operators who regularly conduct missions at night and cannot rely on external light sources.

One gimbal, three or four sensors — multiple data streams in a single flight

The main operational advantage of the H20 series is the ability to capture data from multiple sensors in a single flight without landing to change the payload. During a power line inspection with the H20T, the operator views in split-screen: the wide-angle image for context, the 20× zoom for close-up inspection of the insulator, the thermal camera to detect any anomalous overheating, and the laser rangefinder to measure the distance from the conductor. All data is synchronised, georeferenced and recorded simultaneously for post-flight analysis.

Compatibility with DJI Matrice 350 RTK and Matrice 300 RTK

The Zenmuse H20 series is compatible with the gimbal connector of the DJI Matrice 350 RTK and the DJI Matrice 300 RTK. On the Matrice 350 RTK with the Dual Gimbal Connector, the H20T or H20N can be paired with a second payload — for example the Zenmuse L2 for LiDAR acquisition or the Zenmuse P1 for photogrammetry — in a single multi-payload configuration. Those who already have a Matrice 300 RTK in their fleet can continue to use the existing H20 payload on the Matrice 350 RTK without needing to replace it.

Why buy the Zenmuse H20 series from DroneBase

We are the only DJI Gold 5 Dealer in Italy with exclusive specialisation in the enterprise sector. The Zenmuse H20 series is available for immediate delivery from our Rimini warehouse with shipping within 24–48h. Our technical team supports payload configuration on the Matrice 350 RTK, sensor calibration and DJI Pilot 2 interface setup for your specific operational scenario. Frequently asked questions about the DJI Zenmuse H20 Series

Which Zenmuse H20 variant should I choose for my scenario?

It depends on the prevailing operational scenario. The Zenmuse H20 is sufficient for daytime visual inspections of infrastructure where thermography is not required. The Zenmuse H20T is the choice for those who need both visual inspection and thermal analysis (photovoltaic systems, power lines, public safety, SAR) — it is the most versatile model and the most widely used in the series. The Zenmuse H20N is specific to night operations in near-total darkness where standard sensors do not produce usable images.

What is the difference between the Zenmuse H20T and the Zenmuse H30T?

The Zenmuse H30T is the next generation of the H20T with improvements across all parameters: new-generation sensors, higher thermal resolution, superior zoom and onboard AI for automatic object detection and tracking. The H20T remains an excellent payload for those who already own one or are purchasing new on a tighter budget. For new purchases, if budget allows the H30T is the recommended choice; if you are looking for the best value in the previous generation, the H20T is still a very strong solution.

Is the Zenmuse H20T compatible with the Matrice 350 RTK?

Yes. The Zenmuse H20 series is fully compatible with the DJI Matrice 350 RTK and with the predecessor Matrice 300 RTK. On the Matrice 350 RTK, the H20/H20T/H20N payload mounts on the standard lower gimbal connector. With the Dual Gimbal Connector it is possible to mount the H20T on one slot and a second payload (L2, P1 or S1) on the other for multi-payload configurations.

Does the Zenmuse H20N really work in total darkness?

The starlight sensors of the Zenmuse H20N are designed to operate in extremely low ambient light conditions, down to 0.001 lux — equivalent to a moonless night in a rural setting. In conditions of complete absolute darkness (inside a building with no light source whatsoever) the visible starlight images are not usable, but the dual thermal zoom camera remains operational regardless of lighting. The combination of the two systems guarantees full operational coverage in any realistic night-time condition.

Does the Zenmuse H20 laser rangefinder measure distances in flight?

Yes. The integrated laser rangefinder measures the distance from the drone to the object targeted by the zoom, with a range of up to 1,200 m. The measurement is available in real time in the DJI Pilot 2 interface and is recorded in the file metadata. It is used to calculate the real dimensions of objects inspected at a distance, measure safety clearances on power lines, determine the distance from potential hazards during SAR operations and georeferenced points of interest with metric precision.
