DJI Zenmuse H20N — Starlight Payload for Night Operations with Low-Light Sensors, Dual Thermal Camera and Laser Rangefinder

The DJI Zenmuse H20N is DJI's payload specialised for operations in minimal or zero-light conditions: it integrates starlight sensors on both the zoom and wide-angle cameras for sharp colour images in near-total darkness, dual thermal zoom cameras for thermal location of people and vehicles, and a laser rangefinder for precise distance measurements up to 1,200 m. Compatible with the DJI Matrice 350 RTK and Matrice 400, it is the payload of choice for law enforcement agencies, night SAR units, civil protection and perimeter security operators who regularly conduct missions after dark or in environments with zero visible visibility. Available for immediate delivery from DroneBase with technical support included.

What is the DJI Zenmuse H20N and when is it the right choice over the H20T

The DJI Zenmuse H20N is the H20 series variant specialised for operations in minimal or zero ambient light conditions. The fundamental difference from the H20T lies in the visible sensor system: whereas the H20T uses standard sensors that require a light source to produce usable images, the H20N integrates starlight sensors — technology developed for military and security surveillance — that amplify available light to the physical limit of the sensor, producing sharp colour images at ambient light levels below 0.001 lux (a moonless night in a rural area). In addition, the dual thermal zoom camera guarantees thermal location of people and vehicles regardless of visibility. It is the payload for those who cannot afford to lose situational awareness during the most critical phase of a night mission.

Starlight sensors — sharp images in near-total darkness

The starlight technology of the Zenmuse H20N is present on both visible cameras in the payload. The starlight zoom camera enables identification of people, vehicles and details at long range in night-time conditions without the need for active illuminators — which could reveal the drone's position during discreet surveillance operations. The starlight wide-angle camera maintains situational awareness of the operational area even in near-total darkness, allowing the operator to orientate the drone and identify points of interest before switching to the zoom. Both sensors produce images in true colour — not black and white as with traditional image intensification systems — significantly improving image readability for the operator.

Dual thermal zoom cameras — thermal location with multiple perspectives

Unlike the H20T which has a single thermal camera, the Zenmuse H20N integrates dual thermal zoom cameras — one wide-angle and one with zoom — providing two complementary thermal perspectives in a single payload. The wide-angle thermal camera offers extended coverage for rapid scanning of large areas in search of thermal signatures; the zoom thermal camera enables identification and thermal classification of specific details at distance. This dual thermal zoom system is particularly effective in SAR operations to distinguish human body heat from ambient heat sources (animals, engines, heated structures) and in surveillance operations for tracking vehicles by engine thermal signature.

1,200 m laser rangefinder — precise measurements even in the dark

The laser rangefinder of the Zenmuse H20N operates independently of lighting conditions, providing precise distance measurements up to 1,200 m even in total darkness. Essential for night operations where visual distance estimation is unreliable: it calculates the distance from potential hazards during approach manoeuvres, measures the real dimensions of objects or areas identified thermally, and georeferenced points of interest for coordinate transmission to ground personnel.

H20N vs H20T — the selection guide

The choice between H20N and H20T depends on the distribution of the operational workload between daytime and night-time, and on the need for quantitative radiometric thermography.

Choose the H20N if:

Your operations are predominantly nocturnal (after dark, in environments with scarce artificial lighting, SAR operations in woodland or rural areas). You need discreet surveillance without active illuminators that would reveal the drone's position. Your operations require visual identification of people at long range in darkness.

Choose the H20T if:

Your operations are predominantly daytime or in sufficient lighting conditions. You need quantitative radiometric thermography — absolute temperature measurement on every pixel — for inspections of photovoltaic systems, power lines or industrial components. You are looking for the best value for money between the two models.

Compatibility with DJI Matrice 350 RTK and Matrice 400

The Zenmuse H20N is compatible with the gimbal connector of the DJI Matrice 350 RTK and the DJI Matrice 400. On the Matrice 350 RTK with the Dual Gimbal Connector it can be paired with a second payload — for example a Zenmuse S1 spotlight for active illumination when needed, or a Zenmuse L2 for simultaneous LiDAR acquisition. Also compatible with the Matrice 300 RTK for those with existing fleets.

Frequently asked questions about the DJI Zenmuse H20N

What is the main difference between the Zenmuse H20N and H20T?

The main difference concerns the visible sensors. The H20T has standard sensors optimised for daytime conditions with good lighting, plus a radiometric thermal camera for absolute temperature measurement. The H20N replaces the standard sensors with starlight sensors for operations in near-total darkness, and adds dual thermal zoom cameras instead of the H20T's single thermal camera. The H20N does not have the quantitative radiometric function: if you need to measure precise temperatures on every pixel (photovoltaic, industrial inspections) choose the H20T; if you operate predominantly at night choose the H20N.

Do the starlight sensors really work in total darkness?

The H20N's starlight sensors produce usable images at light levels down to 0.001 lux — equivalent to a moonless night in open rural country. In conditions of complete absolute darkness (inside a building with no light source whatsoever) the visible sensors do not produce usable images, but the dual thermal zoom camera remains fully operational regardless of lighting. The combination of the two systems guarantees complete operational coverage in any realistic night-time scenario.

Which drones is the Zenmuse H20N compatible with?

The Zenmuse H20N is compatible with the DJI Matrice 350 RTK, DJI Matrice 400 and DJI Matrice 300 RTK. It is not compatible with the Matrice 30 Series, the Mavic 3 or consumer platforms. On the Matrice 350 RTK with the Dual Gimbal Connector it can be paired with a second payload for multi-sensor configurations.

Can the H20N also be used during the day?

Yes, the Zenmuse H20N is fully operational in daytime conditions too. The starlight sensors work normally in full sunlight — there is no image saturation as with older image intensifier systems. During the day the H20N produces images of quality comparable to the H20T. The night-time specialisation does not compromise daytime performance, making the H20N a versatile choice for those who operate across both time periods.

What does the DJI Care Enterprise Basic Renew for H20N cover?

The DJI Care Enterprise Basic Renew for the Zenmuse H20N is the annual renewal of Care Enterprise coverage, activatable upon expiry of the original Care plan. It covers accidental damage (drops, collisions, water contact) with payload replacement or repair at fixed costs, priority technical support and scheduled maintenance interventions. For a €12,185 payload, Care Enterprise pays for itself amply at the first avoided incident.
