Drone magnetometer – Sensys MagDrone R3
The ultra-portable MagDrone R3 drone magnetometer is perfectly compatible with DJI M300 and M350 RTK drones. Designed to survey large areas, the MagDrone R3 proves indispensable when ground surveys are no longer possible for either humans or vehicles(UAVs).
Features of the MagDrone R3
The MagDrone R3, starting with model SN 200xxx, has a built-in GPS and can be connected to an external GPS for optimal data geotagging. This configuration is especially recommended when the R3 is used with the SkyHub on-board computer and an RTK-equipped drone.
For accurate results, it is critical to fly as low as possible during survey operations, especially when locating man-made objects or artifacts. The recommended altitude for activities such as searching for unexploded ordnance(UXO) is 1 meter or less above the surface. Therefore, it is essential that the drone be equipped with a terrain monitoring system, which is included in the recommended magnetometer package.
Applications of the MagDrone R3
The MagDrone R3 is versatile and can be used in a wide range of applications, including:
- General Surveys: Ideal for surveys over large areas and for creating magnetic maps of scientific interest.
- Mineral Exploration: Useful for searching for mineral deposits.
- Security and BOB: Perfect for scanning areas for bombs and ammunition, for preventive control and surveillance of sensitive areas against intruders.
- Archaeology: Supports archaeological research by locating underground metal objects.
- Searching for Metal Objects: Effective in searching for metal objects weighing a few hundred grams or more that lie underground.
- Survey of Substructures: Essential for the detection of underground structures.
Note that the general rule with the magnetometer when it is necessary to detect man-made objects or artifacts is to fly as low as possible. Recommended altitude for activities such as UXO research: 1 m above the surface or less. This means that the drone must be equipped with a terrain monitoring system (included in the recommended magnetometer package).
How it works
Operation of the MagDroneR3 is simple to use. It comes with a single button and a built-in server that can be accessed from any WIFI device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. This helps simplify setup, configuration, system control, as well as remote start/stop of recordings and data downloading.
The MagDrone data tool helps to identify flown tracks, trim, filter, and compensate raw data, generate a preview, and export to various formats to further process the recorded values, such as using MAGNETO® software, GIS tools, or Matlab with its own scripting.
MagDrone series: filters out noise
With a sampling rate of 200 Hz, the MagDrone series can easily filter out noise from network frequencies, infrastructure or UAV/drone engines. Therefore, MagDrone devices can be installed directly on the drone landing gear to enable a very compact configuration.
MagBase – Magnetometer Data
Together with the SENSYS MagBase instrument acting as a reference station, data from the drone-based magnetometer can be correlated with data from the MagBase. This will enable the cancellation of temporary noise sources such as passing vehicles or net frequencies.
